Which way Amodu?

The Nigerian Football Federation is apparently going to make a decision on The Super Eagles Chief Coach Shuaibu Amodu over the Weekend (7/8th Feb 2010) . All Nigerian Football Fans are eagerly awaiting the new direction (or not) that will be revealed to us after the meetings of the board and the technical committee have been concluded. Which direction will the NFF Take ?

There is a popular and real momentum gathering amongst fans towards showing the coach the door and starting afresh 4 months before the FIFA World Cup. A lot of nigerian fans just feel the coach is not up to the job and doesn't have the Technical Capacity to succeed.
In a democracy or indeed any form of organised politics where the Board of the NFF have to go through an election with a view to winning, they cannot entirely dicard popular opinion. it will be foolhardy and they'll do so at their peril.

Keeping Amodu on board is also an option some of the pragmatists amongt football fans are advocating for because of the little time available for a new man to make any significant impact on the players that will make a positive difference.

The NFF may win short term victory with the Fans and indeed if the right candidate is appointed maybe even win a re election.

If the NFF stick with Amodu, it will be a position they will need to justify to the Sports Ministry and Nigerian fans at every turn as this position appears quite unpopular right now.

What do you think ?

Comments.....

A Change of Nigerian Super Eagles Call up Policy

Coach Shuaibu Amodu, Chief Coach of the super Eagles should be given a lot of credit for feeling the pulse of the nation at key times during the selection process for the few places available in the super eagles and choosing the appropriate time toinject fresh players in the mix. Coach Shuaibu has invited Nigeria’s junior internationals at U17 level to join the Nigerian squad that is preparing for the Nations cup in Angola. Players like Sani Emmanuel, Stanley Okoro and Azeez Balogun have deserved their call up. Their chances of making the final squad some commentators have said are very slim but we’re hopeful at Clique sports that a couple of these young lads can squeeze into the final team and justify their inclusion. Grab your chance with both hands now lads… it truly might turn out to be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Imagine playing at the African Cup of nations for the senior National team a couple of months after your first appearance in National colours at U17 level…. We’ll keep up to speed on their progress so watch this space.

Sani Emmanuel the striker with 5 goals at the just concluded FIFA U17 World Cup Nigeria 2009 has been sought by a few top clubs in Europe. Arsenal and Real Madrid have their scouts weighing up signing up the Nigerian junior international. Arsenal football Club may however have the edge with their well established policy of recruiting youth and Nurturing their young players to become senior internationals for their respective countries and giving them a chance to play in the premiership and Champions league may prove crucial in the youngsters final decision.

Nigeria Lose the final to the Swiss 0-1.

Nigeria and Switzerland battled for 90 minutes in the amazing atmosphere created at the Abuja national Stadium. The Match kicked off at 7 pm in the evening after Spain successfully defeated the Colombian team in the 3rd Place play off by the same score line 1-0. Isco was the sole goalscorer for the Spanish and the Spanish no10 jersey had a fantastic tournament in Nigeria. Nigeria did start the final match against Spain with more intent and dominated the first half. The Nigerian fans took up every available seat at the Stadium and it may very well have been the largest turnout for an U17 match in the World. Certainly it was the largest turnout for that level of football in Nigeria. The Nigerian team however could not convert any of the great chances that they had while they were in the ascendancy in the first half.
As the old adage in football goes, football is a game of two halves and the second half was very different form the first. The Swiss somehow got rid of their stage fright and came out to counter attack the Nigerians in the 2nd half. They showed a lot more intent and purpose and eventually got their reward in the 70th minute from a set piece, a corner Kick headed in by the Swiss no9 . the Nigerians struck the cross bar in the 83rd minute and it was looking more and more like it was not going to be their day. The Swiss successfully held out to win the tournament in what was a remarkable achievement for any European side to adapt to the African weather and beat a very talented and promising Nigerian team in a World cup final in front of their home crowd. The World will not forget Sani Emmanuel (MVP /Golden ball recipient and silver boot for scoring 5 goals) Stanley Okoro, Edafe Egbedi and the talented Ramon Azeez in Midfield (bronze ball winner). Well done to ALL the youth players that represented their countries at Nigeria 2009. Well done to the Nigerian team especially for playing such beautiful football and finally we salute the champions of the FIFA U17 World Cup Nigeria 2009-Switzerland. You are the deserved champions and the world will expect you to build on this in the future.
Going into the Final against the Swiss….

The Swiss team has had a terrific tournament so far but it seems that they may have met their match in Nigeria. Nigeria with so much skill and physical strength as well as the overwhelming support of the football raving Nigerians could prove too much for the Swiss to handle. Cliquesports Management partner Kitan Olateru-Olagbegi is of the opinion that the Swiss are technically the best team at the tournament. He went on to state on channels TV that ‘They have the most individually gifted players and seem to know themselves and understand each other’s game inside out. If there is a team at the tournament that is capable of upsetting Nigeria, it is the Swiss. Players like Ben Kalifa, Ricardo Rodriguez and the Goalkeeper Kriegist have been outstanding. Its all finely poised to be a truly epic battle. Nigeria could however still use the massive home support to their advantage.’
Edafe Egbedi has expressed his joy at being able to represent Nigeria in the final of a world cup and has promised to play his part in the effort to bring the U17 World cup trophy home. ‘The Swiss are a good team but our team has played very well and keeps getting better with every game. By the grace of God we should be victorious and win the cup for all Nigerians’. Coach John Obuh has also sounded a word of caution before the game. ‘We must concentrate for the 90 minutes and play to our strengths. The team has done very well so far but it has come down to the final with a resolute fighting spirit and the team cannot afford to let this fantastic opportunity slip. We will surely win the cup for Nigerians come Sunday.’

No room for error for Nigeria

Buoyed by their stunning fightback from three goals down to claim a dramatic draw against European champions Germany, host nation Nigeria will be determined to tighten up at the back and take all three points against Honduras. While Los Catrachos may have begun their Group A campaign here at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009 with a 1-0 reverse against Argentina, their individual skill and team spirit caused La Albiceleste problems throughout.
The game
Nigeria – Honduras, Tuesday 27 October, Abuja, 19.00 (local time)
The stakes
Nigerian supporters leaving the Abuja National Stadium on Saturday went away delighted to have seen their favourites claim a draw against remarkable odds, though it is unlikely Golden Eaglets’ fans would be as happy with one point against Honduras. Given their status as host nation and defending champions, failure to win the game would pile the pressure on coach John Obuh and his young charges.
Over in the Honduran camp, supremo Eugenio Umanzor will be asking his team for more of the same after a promising showing against Argentina. Putting in a particularly lively display against La Albiceleste was forward and captain Antony Lozano, though even steely centre-back Jose Tobias may have his hands full with the likes of Terry Envoh, Edafe Egbedi and Stanley Okoro. Yet with the burden of expectation firmly on their opponents’ shoulders, the technically gifted Catrachos will feel confident of springing a surprise.
The stat
1 – Honduras’ previous appearance at a FIFA competition on Nigerian soil, the 1999 edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, ended in three defeats from three games. Drawn in a fierce group here at Nigeria 2009, can the Central Americans snatch a win to create a small slice of history?
The words
“Against Germany we conceded three goals because we didn’t show any tactical discipline whatsoever. But my players have demonstrated they’ve got the ability to bounce back and put in an improved performance against Honduras.” John Obuh, Nigeria coach.
“We knew it’d be very difficult before we came here, but we want to prove ourselves worthy opponents. We were against Argentina and we will be again against Nigeria.” Eugenio Umanzor, Honduras coach.

Source FIFA News
Nigeria took a giant step toward
Nigeria took a giant step toward booking their place in the knockout stages of the FIFA U-17 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Honduras at the National Stadium in Abuja. The Central Americans tried to build a defensive wall against the hosts and holders from the outset, but Abdul Ajagun found a way through early in the second half to seal a slim 1-0 win for the Golden Eaglets.
The second match from the capital started slowly, but the hosts managed to carve out the first chance of note after 16 minutes. Taking advantage of a bit of a mix-up in the Honduran rearguard, Edafe Egbedi rifled a shot in from 12 yards that brought the best out of goalkeeper Harold Fonseca.
The Golden Eaglets continued to press, however, and seemed to be camped out in the Central Americans’ penalty area. On 28 minutes, Stanley Okoro steered his shot wide after being sent in clear on goal. Then, after a flurry of fruitless Nigerian attacks, Kenneth Omeruo had a golden chance to poke home at the back post, but his awkward header went harmlessly wide as the whistle went for the break with hosts having all of the possession but nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.
The visitors came out from the change room with renewed spirit, committing more men into attack than had been the case in a tentative opening period. On 50 minutes, qualifying top scorer and captain Antony Lozano tried his luck from 20 yards, forcing Dami Paul into a fine save. The hosts were back in control soon after, though, and seconds after Okoro missed a sitter from six yards, Abdul Ajagun lofted a delicate curler into the top corner from the edge of the box to make it 1-0 to the hosts in the 55th minute. The young Catrachos did their all to grind their way level, but in the end the Nigerians were able to hold onto their slender lead.
Nigeria next face already qualified Argentina on 30 October in Bauchi while Honduras, with no points from their two consecutive 1-0 losses, meet Germany in Abuja that same day.
